Trinidad, the seat of Las Animas County, is a historic Old West Victorian town on the Santa Fe Trail where the plains and mountains meet. You can take a step back in time when you visit Trinidad and the area. Beautiful blue skies, a mild Southwestern climate and friendly people make this a great place to live.

Ours is a semi-arid area where elevation, location and low humidity combine to provide a moderate and comfortable dry climate. Weather extremes are random and don't last long.

Trinidad Lake provides a great fishing experience with trout, bass, bluegill, stripers and many others. Monument Lake and North Lake are beautiful high mountain lakes with camping available at Monument Lake. Be sure to take the trip into the San Isabel National Forest near Cuchara up to Bear and Blue Lake for a mountain setting that is unmatched and well worth the trip.


Southern Colorado also offers many opportunities for hunting with excellent elk, deer, bear, mountain lion, turkey and pronghorn hunting.

The Bosque del Oso State Wildlife Area protects nearly 30,000 acres of critical habitat. As a public wildlife area, many generations will enjoy the Bosque's open spaces, wildlife, scenery and recreation.

You can take a step back in time when you visit Trinidad and the area. You'll enjoy the Old Firehouse No. 1 Children's Museum, the Louden-Henritze Archaeology Museum, the A.R. Mitchell Memorial Museum and Gallery and the Trinidad History Museum.
